When I was a first time car owner, I spent a lot of time going back to my dodge dealer chain, availing of repair or fix-up services even for the most simple tasks. Through time, I learned how to do those mundane tasks myself, which is really great because I save quite an amount of money in the process. Now, driving a newer car model that I purchased from a chrysler dealer, maintaining a vehicle became easier, and I also have to let go of outdated maintenance beliefs that will only leave car owners with more bills to pay. Myth 1: The penny test Yes, the old trusty penny test procedure has saved many a car owner some unprecedented and ugly car blow ups on the road. In this procedure, a penny is inserted upside down to a tire tread. If the top of Lincoln’s head shows up, that’s the red alert -- it’s time to change those tires! Why it’s outdated: Some experts say that using a quarter instead of a penny is the better option. The distance between Lincoln’s head to the edge of the coin is 2/32, while the distance between the edge of a coin and Washington’s wig is 4/32 of an inch - this gives you better allowance and will not let you drive with your tire in a “bald” condition. Myth 2: Changing oil every 3,000 miles The first tip my grandpa taught me when he bought a jeep from a jeep dealer was to change my oil every 3,000 miles. My father does that too, and everyone else in the neighborhood. Why it’s outdated: With the advent of these modern cars though, the 3,000 mile cars became an outdated mandate. It’s not bad for your engine, but it will really take a toll on your wallet. Many cars today have a standard period of 6,000 miles before the oil must be replaced. When I bought our family minivan, my owners manual says that oil change should occur at a maximum of 7,500 mile interval. The best thing is to refer to your manufacturer’s manual. Myth 3: Using premium gas for better car performance Premium gas has a higher octane level than the regular fuel in your gas stations. Wouldn’t it be alright to give a treat to your car and improve it’s performance? It’s more expensive, so you would probably get something good out of it right? Why it’s outdated: A jeep dealer customer I know said that it is quite surprising that many people think that premium gas is great for your car just because it is a lot more expensive than the regular fuel. But unless it’s really the fuel specified for your car, premium gas will really not improve really improve the performance of your vehicle - it will only lead you to unnecessarily spend money on gas. rnAfter learning these myths, I can now assure myself that I have been maintaining the car I bought from my chrysler dealer properly. Other dodge dealer customers have corrected themselves also, and it’s not too late to change your ways yourself too.
