Constipation is a condition that can be very distressing for the sufferer. It’s described as a medical condition that results in very slow and in many cases, painful bowel movements. Constipation can also cause the stools to become hard and dry. This happens when the colon draws out water from the stool. The longer the stool remains in the colon the drier and harder it will become. This causes the bowels movements to slow down leading to bloating, abdominal pains and even an impacted colon. Due to the slow bowel movements your digestive system cannot eliminate waste matter fast enough. This has the effect of reducing your metabolism and your ability to digest fats effectively, which subsequently makes you, put on the weight. Another complication of being constipated is the water retention it can cause, which can also increase your weight. What’s more, with waste matter building up in your large intestines the extra bulk is also going to increase your weight. What Causes Constipation The main culprit that makes you constipated is the food you eat. Diets that consist mostly of high fat and processed foods are going to make you more prone to constipation. Heavily refined foods are low in nutrients and especially fiber.Fiber is very important because of its laxative qualities. It keeps you regular because it stimulates the peristaltic movements of the colon. These are responsible for pushing waste matter through your system for elimination. Unfortunately, many people don’t eat enough fiber from their diet. The recommended daily intake of fiber is 35 gms, however most people are eating only 15 gms per day. Another big factor for causing constipation is dehydration because we’re not drinking enough fluids, especially water. How To Overcome Your Constipation And Lose Weight Now that we know the constipation does cause weight gain, how do you go about curing your constipation? If you’re constipated then the best place to start is with your diet. If you tend to eat lots of processed foods, chocolate, sugar and dairy products, then you need to replace these with natural whole foods. This means plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. These foods are rich in nutrients that will strengthen your immune system. They also contain natural enzymes that help your body digest and absorb the nutrients more effectively. They’re also great sources of fiber that will improve your bowel movements and keep you regular. When you increase your fiber intake it’s very important that your drink more water. For the body to benefit from the laxative effects of fiber it needs water. Therefore, aim to drink around 8 glasses of water each day.
