This article answers the question “does rhinoplasty leave scars?” However, before going into this post-operative aspect, a little introduction to this nose surgery procedure would be in place. The Greek term “rhinos” translates as “nose” while the term “plassein” translates as “to shape” or “to mold.” The cosmetic surgery can improve the way a person’s nose looks.

The following issues can be addressed effectively with cosmetic nose surgery:

  • Nose size with respect to the other features of the face
  • A big, sagging, upturned, or bulbous nasal tip
  • Nasal deviation and asymmetry
  • Noticeable depressions or humps on the bridge
  • Thickness in the area of the bridge
  • Big, upturned, or wide nostrils

Minimal/Inconspicuous Scarring with Advanced Medical Technology

Now coming to the part about scarring, all surgeries cause scarring because an incision has to be made in the particular area that is going to be worked on. If an incision is made, scarring will result. However, with the rate at which fresh advancements are being made in medical technology, it is now possible to minimize scarring or at least make it hidden or inconspicuous.

There are two types of procedures and the incisions and scarring vary for both. In the case of the open procedure, the incision would be made on the skin that is under the nostrils or on the columella. This causes only a fine line or small scar that is well-hidden from view. What’s more, the scar would become more and more inconspicuous with the passage of time. In the case of the closed procedure, the incisions are limited to the inside of the nose. So here, the scarring is not visible at all.

Rhinoplasty Surgery by a Reliable Plastic Surgeon Ensures Minimum Scarring

To an extent, the degree of scarring also depends on the plastic surgeon you go to. So choose wisely. Give preference to a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. Such a surgeon is one who has received Board Certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery. A Board Certification in Plastic Surgery can be got only if the surgeon has completed a formal residency in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. He must have also cleared a rigorous oral and written examination. Other factors that should guide your choice are:

  • The surgeon should have performed successful rhinoplasty surgery frequently and not just one or two times a year
  • He should be willing to answer all your questions patiently
  • He should check with you whether you have any conditions that may be contraindications to the procedure
  • He should tell you about any probable risks, side effects, and complications of the procedure

So, rhinoplasty or nose reshaping does leave scars. However, the scarring is not going to be obvious and so this shouldn’t dissuade you from going for the procedure.
