Dog Diarrhea Duration - 2 Types of Diarrhea and Their Duration
Dog diarrhea is categorized the same way as human diarrhea. These are the acute diarrhea and chronic diarrhea. The dog diarrhea duration will depend on the type as well as the treatment as the severity of the condition also varies.
1. Acute Dog Diarrhea
Acute dog diarrhea is the most common type of diarrhea to strike dogs. This is because of the scavenging habit that is normal to dogs and other carnivores and omnivores. They normally get diarrhea as a way for their bodies to remove the bad substance that these dogs have eaten.
This means that acute diarrhea is a normal body reaction to harmful substances that were ingested similar to vomiting. The dog diarrhea duration for this type is usually a minimum of one day and a maximum of two weeks. During this period you will need to compliment your dog’s healing process by keeping it hydrated and nourished without upsetting its stomach.
2. Chronic Dog Diarrhea
Chronic dog diarrhea is often mistaken for acute diarrhea. Technically, a chronic diarrhea is a repetitive acute diarrhea because the body is continually trying to remove a perceived ingested harmful substance when it can be cause by another condition. It can go on in a daily basis or with an interval of a day or two between each attack.
The common trait is that the diarrhea will not go away completely making chronic dog diarrhea a severely debilitating condition for your dog if it is not stopped. This is the time to be alarmed as no single remedy will treat this type of diarrhea unless it is properly diagnosed by a veterinarian. This means that chronic diarrhea is a symptom of another condition that your dog is currently suffering with.
These can be worm infestation, a viral or bacterial infection, a presence of a non-digestible object inside its intestines or a canine cancer. The dog diarrhea duration is typically longer than the acute type and will remain until the real cause is treated. The treatment could vary from additional medications such as dewormers and Gastriplex to surgeries depending on the actual cause.
Knowing what type of diarrhea your dog currently has is very important. Failing to identify a chronic dog diarrhea could cause you your dog’s life. Dog diarrhea duration for each type will help dog owners in getting their dogs the correct medical treatment in returning their pets to a healthier state.
