Dog owners that know diarrhea is one of the most common ailments that strike their pets. It is important to know what causes this in dogs and from that learn how to prevent such conditions. Dog diarrhea prevention is the best option to keep your dogs healthy and strong.
1. Protect your Dogs from Parasites
A common cause of diarrhea in dogs are parasitic worms such as roundworms and hookworms. It is even more common with puppies than adult dogs. To ensure that your dog is worm free regularly deworm them once a month. This way even if your dog is exposed to places that have worms it gets treated immediately. Also provide clean water always to prevent unwanted protozoans such as the Giardia and Coccidia. You should also clean your dog’s water container regularly as this can host such protozoans that cause diarrhea. Doing all these are effective dog diarrhea prevention.
2. Be Careful in Diet Changes
There are times when dog owners would want to expose their pets to a new type of food. This is good as it encourages your dog to adapt in changes in its diet. However you should not make changes without care. Allergic reactions could occur which sometimes result to diarrhea. As a dog diarrhea prevention expose your dog to new things in small amounts. For new dog snacks give your dog a piece of it for a day. Increase the serving gradually until your dog is adapted to the new food. The same goes with dog meals. You should give new meals once or twice a week until your dog is used to it.
3. Keep Watch of your Dogs
We already know that diarrhea is caused by what your dogs ate. So the ultimate prevention will be to ensure that you know what your dogs are eating. This could be a tedious task but will be easier if your dogs are in an environment your control. You should prevent your dogs from going scavenging as they could eat something that can cause diarrhea. There will be times that you will miss and your dog would end up eating something bad. If that ever happens just prepare the home remedies for dog diarrhea.
