Dog Diarrhea with Blood - 4 Causes of Bloody Diarrhea
Diarrhea in dogs can be treated at home. However, when you can see blood in your dog’s stool when it has diarrhea it is now time to have your dog treated by a veterinarian. Dog diarrhea with blood is a serious condition in dogs that needs serious medical attention.
1. Foreign Objects
A bloody diarrhea could be caused by a foreign object that has torn the intestinal walls of your dog. This type of dog diarrhea with blood is common to puppies as they are not yet capable of properly digesting bones and sticks. Get your dog to a pet clinic with a sample of the bloody stool to help the Vets identify if the tearing is in the large or small intestine.
2. Poison
Puppies are more prone to eating poison but adult dogs can also eat them accidentally when the poison is mixed with food. This is commonly rat poison in residential houses that dogs eat by mistake. Other common causes of poisoning are from pesticides and detergents. When this is the cause of the bloody diarrhea immediately admit your dog to animal clinics as this condition could be lethal. Dog diarrhea with blood is due to most poisons burn stomach and intestinal walls.
3. Microbes
The Parvovirus is the virus that causes bloody diarrhea in puppies and could result to death due to heavy dehydration accompanied by blood loss. Other microbe that causes dog diarrhea with blood is the harmful type of E. coli bacteria that causes tearing in the intestinal walls. Antibiotics are commonly prescribed along with probiotic supplements to treat E. coli attacks. For the Parvovirus stronger medications are needed.
4. Worms
Parasitic worms bore wholes in intestines and when severe infestation occurs dog diarrhea with blood occurs. This is common to dogs that are prone to scavenging as they can eat a lot of unclean food and fecal matter. Deworming is the only treatment and lots of fluid to help replenish water loss from liquid stools with blood.
Dog diarrhea with blood needs fast treatments to prevent additional complications and death. Although remedies are available they can be costly so implement several measures to prevent such cases. If you have puppies monitor their behavior to prevent them from swallowing things that they should not be swallowing. For bigger dogs walk them instead of letting them go out without supervision to prevent your dogs from scavenging.
