Dog problem barking is triggered by a lot of causes. Some of them are natural while most of them come from its condition or environment. There are certain dog breeds that bark more frequently than others, and one of these are the canines that belong to the terrier family. If you want to raise a puppy, you should be able to know some of the characteristics of its parents to avoid dealing with genetically-influenced barking problems in the future. But if you notice that your pet is barking inappropriately, you should take time to determine its triggering factors in order to put it to a stop. Here are some factors that can trigger problem barking: 1. Improper Confinement Improper confinement is one of the major causes of barking problems. In includes locking him in a closed space such as a cage or a crate, tethering, or putting him in a condition where his canine movements are limited. This type of barking signals the dog's frustration. You need to give him enough space and comfort to make him stop that noise. 2. Lack of exercise / boredom Dogs with lots of excess energy have the tendency to bark excessively. If your pet is bored, he may also bark unceasingly to your or other dogs' attention. It's his way of releasing extra unused energy and monotony. You should find time to exercise your dog by walking him for at least 30 minutes every morning. This is a healthy routine not just for your pet but for you as well. 3. Environmental Sounds Sounds in your surroundings, such as the ones produced by cats, passing cars, people talking loudly, firecrackers, knocking, barking of other dogs and other strange noise can trigger barking. Some dogs that are accustomed to certain sounds they hear during daytime do not react, but when they hear the same sound at night, they bark at it. Conditioning your pet to the sound and giving a treat when he keeps silent upon hearing it will make him learn to avoid barking. 4. Separation Anxiety If your dog becomes restless and barks excessively every time you leave or arrive, he is manifesting symptoms of separation anxiety. You need to consider putting him through some behavior formation sessions such as crate training. You may also seek the help of a professional in order to remove your pet's anxiety, especially if your canine is already more than one year old. 5. Territorial Behavior Dogs are territorial by nature, and they tend to defend their master's surroundings when other persons or animals come by. If your pet reacts only to the presence of strangers, he doesn't have a behavioral issue actually. But if he's noisy and always on the alert, even under normal circumstances, you should seek the advice of a dog professional because this is no longer normal. Excessive barking is a problem than can sever your good relationship with your pet and your neighbors. You should discover its triggering factors to be able to stop it.
