Flash memory is a type of non–volatile computer memory which is mainly used in memory cards and USB flash drives for storage and transfer of data from one computer or digital device to the other. It is a specific type of EEPROM (electrically-erasable programmable read-only memory). Flash memory offers faster access times and has better kinetic shock resistance than hard disks. Hence it is usually used in portable devices. When it is used in a memory card, it is extremely durable and capable of withstanding high pressure and temperature. So, this type of memory is easy to carry around and is suitable for rough and tough use.

The erasure process of contents of this memory is as fast as the flash of a camera, hence the name "flash memory". With the advancement of technology, people have become more and more gadget-freaks. Increase in use of mobile phones, laptops, digital cameras has made the flash memory cards even more popular. In markets, there are various formats of memory cards available like Multimedia Card (MMC), Memory Stick (MS), Compact Flash (CF), Secure Digital (SD) etc.

With so many options available, the customers are often confused regarding which one to buy. However the SD cards are quite popular these days. They are very useful in transferring data provided they are compatible. The best part is you need not worry about the reliability of these cards as they can be easily formatted and used again. We can see and use the data stored in these cards by using memory-card readers.

The micro SD is the smallest memory card available in the market these days. The best part of using these cards is their small size and yet large storage capacity. Its size is 15mm*11mm*1mm and it is available with storage capacity of 32/MB, 64/MB, 128/MB, 2/GBs. The DTR (data transfer rate) is 100 Mbit/ s. It is commonly used in mobile phones, digital cameras, expandable USB flash drives, portable media players etc. These cards are now used for watching movies too.

These cards because of their compact size have gained much popularity. Anyone having basic knowledge of using a computer can use these micro-SD cards. In order to use them, you just need to place them in micro-SD adapters which should be connected to the computer to transfer the data. One of the best features of these cards is that they can be locked too. This protects the data from getting deleted. So these cards store photographs, songs, movies and much more.
