It may seem like a convenience to be able to donate your boat or sailboat to a charity and it certainly can be but there are some things that need to be considered before you make the leap and actually do it. After all, you want to make sure that everybody who is possibly benefited from the exchange is going to receive the benefits. This would not only include those that were the recipient of the monies made available by the boat or sailboat donation but it is also necessary to make sure that you benefit as much as possible as well. Here are some of the things that can be considered to help you make a wise decision.

Perhaps more than anything else that needs to be looked into in advance is the charity itself. There may be certain charities that you're willing to support while others may be better avoided, in your opinion. This can be researched a number of different ways but one of the ways that can be utilized is the Better Business Bureau. In many cases, you're going to be able to research the information directly online and make a good decision as to whether it is a worthwhile charity to support. There may be something else that is available, however, which will benefit you as well.

Some of the charities that accept these types of donations are actually working as middlemen and will be able to direct your money in a number of different directions. You may find this to be beneficial because it gives you the opportunity to support a charity that may not accept this type of donation directly. Many people find this to be a convenience that is not to be overlooked.

The delivery of the boat is also going to be an option that you want to consider as well. Some of the charities that are available will send somebody to pick up the boat but obviously, this is going to cost additional money. There may be times when it is unavoidable but if you happen to choose a charity that is in your area, you can deliver the item yourself. This will allow additional money to be directed to the charity and not spent on the delivery of the product.

Of course, I'm sure that you are considering including this item on your taxes and that certainly is a good idea. You do need to make sure that you keep very good paperwork and that you have an accountant help you with the numbers because you don't want to end up in any hot water. Don't over inflate the price of the boat in order to get a greater tax advantage, as it can end up hurting you in the long run. Since the majority of us are not familiar with how to do this, try to choose a charity that will help you with the taxes so that everything can be done properly from the start to your full advantage.
