For Douglas Hamm a way of being closer to God is capturing His beauty through the lens of the camera. The spiritual images by Douglas Hamm are a collection of photographs he took of clouds, mountains, rivers as well as people in submissive poses. Accompanying the photos are verses from the Holy Bible that compliment the subject of the photograph. The response to these pictures has been phenomenal. People felt the same experience as going to church while looking at these spiritual images by Douglas Hamm because they came to appreciate God’s creations and His Glory through these photographs. “In our busy and tech heavy lives Douglas gives us a reminder to be thankful to God for the amazing world that He created for us”, says a fan. It seems Douglas has tried to explain the verses of the Holy Bible through these visuals like in the “Secret Place” he chose the verse “My people will dwell in a peaceful habitation, in the secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places” (Isaiah 32: 18) and in the photograph he captured a mountain side on which there is a silhouette, carved by nature in the red stone of the mountain, of a woman reclining next to a river; a quiet resting place! It’s amazing to see how Douglas found such places to photograph. It’s as though God has helped him in this noble cause Himself. Most of these spiritual images by doug hamm have been photographed in the rugged terrine of the Southwest. The photographs have not been photoshoped so what you see is a hundred percent natural imagery. Douglas has taken his life into this religious direction and found a way to express his faith through his devout art. He reminds us through his photographs that the presence of God is everywhere from the epic landscapes (“God is Good”- 1997) to the gentle swaying of palm leaves in the breeze (“Palm”-1981). The spiritual images by Douglas Hamm do not only depict the wonders of God through the natural scenic beauty. He has also photographed people and situations for which he has been able to draw a connection to the verses of the Holy Bible as well. “Reflections of Mexico”- 1981 is accompanied by the verse “Then He said to His disciples, 'The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.'” (Matthew 9:37). The image shows laborers on the coast of Puerto Vallarta in Mexico taking their burros back home after loading them with bags of sand to make concrete. Some of the spiritual images by Douglas Hamm have even expressed spirituality through the manmade object like the bridge at Roosevelt Lake in Arizona that forms the Christian eye with its reflection on the lake. The way he has been able to capture the light at just the right time and from just the right angles is impeccable. While viewing these spiritual images by Douglas Hamm one seems to drift off into the image itself and feels the divinity spread all the way down to the soul. The images are truly awe inspiring.
