Driver Facing Charges for Police-Officer Involved Crash in Lower Valley

A 26-year-old man is accused of causing a crash with a police vehicle with the El Paso Police Department in the Lower Valley Monday night.

According to police officials, two 26-year-old men and two police officers were involved in the crash on North Loop and Lancaster Drive.

The driver of a 2005 Dodge Magnum, Johnathan Herrera, ignored a stop sign and entered the intersection into the path of oncoming traffic. The police vehicle struck the Dodge Magnum driven by Johnathan Herrera and skidded across all lanes of traffic, ultimately crashing into a rock wall.

Before the crash, the police vehicle was heading east along the 9100 block of North Loop Drive when Herrera was northbound on Lancaster Drive. The driver and his passenger, Mark Martinez, suffered serious injuries and were taken to the hospital.

The officer driving the patrol vehicle was treated and released for minor injuries. The police officer in the passenger seat suffered a fractured femur and was taken to the hospital.

Currently, charges against Herrera are pending as the investigation continues to be ongoing at this time.
