Drug rehab helps thousands of addicts all over the country make lasting recoveries every year. Over the last few decades, advances in neuroscience and psychology have helped drug rehab specialists make several breakthroughs and develop extremely effective treatments. Though some laypeople still mistake addiction for a lack of willpower, medical professional have come to understand that it is truly a disease which requires clinical treatment. The most widely-used treatments are known as evidence-based therapies. These primarily include individual counseling, peer-group discussions, and family group therapy. While the group methods help many addicts to get better, individual counseling sessions are almost always the most effective drug rehab therapies for ensuring lasting sobriety. When individual counseling begins, addicts talk about their life circumstances, personalities, and character traits with addiction specialists. By answering tough questions and confronting their deepest personal issues, addicts uncover the root causes of their addictions. Most importantly, addicts learn to identify their addiction triggers. Triggers are the people, locations, situations, and even physical objects which most often lead patients to use drugs. It is crucial for patients to recognize these triggers so that they can avoid future drug cravings once they return to society. Once patients discover their triggers, addiction counselors help them develop avoidance strategies. For instance, heroin users may avoid driving by dealers’ houses or places they used to get high, and most alcoholics need to avoid bars and clubs. Removing temptation is one of the best ways for addicts to avoid relapse. Avoidance isn’t always possible, however, so counselors also help addicts to develop coping techniques for situations which induce drug cravings. These situations may involve other people actually consuming drugs or alcohol, or they may simply create craving-inducing stress for rehab patients. In either case, personalized coping techniques can help drug rehab patients stay sober long after they complete their treatment programs. Other therapies help addicts apply what they learn during individual counseling to the outside world. For example, reality therapy helps addicts smoothly transition between clinical life and the responsibility and independence of the outside world. By having inpatients cook, clean, shop, and perform other daily activities for themselves, reality therapists help addicts to “practice” clean living in a safe environment before they leave their clinics. Reality therapy also teaches addicts when they should employ certain strategies for dealing with their cravings. The central idea of these therapies is that there are certain situations people can control, and other situations they cannot control. When addicts have control over the environments, they are free to choose avoidance and avoid cravings altogether. In uncontrollable situations, however, addicts must cope with stress, difficult people, and even drug occurring in their vicinities. Overall, individual counseling is the most effective and widely-used treatment method in drug rehab clinics across the country.
