Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEx), the operator of the stock and futures markets, is expected to report flat or modestly higher earnings on Wednesday.
Forecasting earnings in a HK$4.9 billion to HK$5.3 billion range, brokers cited flat turnover on the stock market, reduced new listings and lower investment income as the main drags on results.
CCB International Securities expects the HKEx to report a net profit of HK$4.9 billion as a result of weak investment income, while UBS expects no profit growth as a result of poor market sentiment at the end of last year. Credit Suisse expects a modest rise in profits of around 4 per cent.
The HKEx, as well as three related clearing houses, earns its revenue from listing fees paid by companies, trading fees paid by investors on stock and futures transactions and fees paid by information vendors for stock information.
In addition, listing fees are likely to show a decline as the number of initial public offerings was reduced as a result of poor market sentiment. Tse expects HKEx to report 5 per cent profit growth.
The euro zone debt crisis also hit investment markets worldwide and many IPOs in the second half of last year were shelved or postponed.
