Mites are small parasites that breed and prosper in the ears of pets like dogs, cats, cattle, rabbits and even rats. They are not visible to the naked eye and can be seen only under a microscope. Apart from causing hay fever and eczema, the worst things that the mites cause are constant itching and irritation. The pets shake their heads madly trying to scratch their ears, and cannot hold their heads straight as they are always in pain. At times, the infection can even spread outside the ears. The ear canals become weak due to constant scratching and tend to bleed. Dried blood can be seen inside or near the ears. Mites are usually more dominant in summer.
Pet lovers can help their pets with some easy home remedies without having to rush to the vet and spend exorbitant amounts.
Cleaning the filth in the ears with witch hazel is one of the easiest of all ear mite home remedies.
Dropping olive oil or vegetable oil into the ears with a syringe is very effective, and the ear can be massaged a little to check the oil from flowing outside. The ears can be cleaned with a cotton ball. This provides great relief to the suffering pets.
Mineral oil too is good, as the mites cannot breed and multiply after it is poured in the ears, thus reducing the number of overall mites and gradually helping in getting rid of them.
Care must be taken to keep the ailing pets away from other pets in the neighborhood, as these mites are extremely contagious and could be passed on to other pets or vice versa.
Pouring a little almond oil into the ear with an ear dropper also discourages the mites from breeding further.
Diatomaceous earth should be spread around the carpet area and at other places in the house where the pets may hang around. This is one of the most effective ear mite home remedies, which tends to kill the mites without harming the pets.
Baking soda or borax solution too can be spilled around the house, over furniture and carpets where the pets are likely to be active. This too is sure to kill mites and fleas that could otherwise enter into the pets' ears.
Vitamin E oil is an excellent antidote to all skin problems. It can be mixed with apple cider vinegar and coconut oil. This can then be put into the pets' ears to kill the mites.
A mixture of yellow dock root extract in three times water can be prepared and inserted into the ear and massaged a little before the pet shakes it out. This kills the mites by repeated use and is the one of the best of all ear mite home remedies.
Garlic is another great healer. Garlic oil can be put in the pets' ears, as it gives relief from pain. It can also be moderately mixed in the pets' food.
Overall, following good hygiene is a must, so that the mites do not spread.
