Mirena IUD is used for preventing pregnancy for up to 5 years in certain women. It is also used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding. Mirena IUD is a progestin intrauterine device (IUD). It may work in several ways. It may change cervical mucus to prevent the sperm from reaching the egg. It may also change the lining of the uterus to prevent implantation in the uterus if an egg is fertilized. This change in the lining of the uterus also helps to decrease heavy menstrual bleeding.

Mirena is a soft, flexible IUD that releases small amounts of hormone locally into your uterus. It gives you birth control you can count on—that lasts for as long as you want, for up to 5 years. Mirena is also proven to reduce heavy periods in women who choose intrauterine contraception.

Precaution before using mirena iud if :-

1) Do not use mirena iud if you are allergic to it or to its ingredient.
2) You should inform your doctor if you are taking any prescription non prescription and herbal medicine before using mirena iud.
3) You should not use this if you are allergic to food, medicines and to any other substance.
4) Do not use this medicine if you have a history of infections, diabetes, severe headache or migraine, heart disease or other heart problems, heart surgery, blood pressure problems, blood vessel problems, stroke or bleeding in the brain, blood clotting problems, or anemia.
5) If you have a history of breast cancer or you know or suspect that you have breast cancer in that case you should not use mirena iud.

Before using this medication device, tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medications you may use, especially of: "blood thinners" (e.g., warfarin), birth control taken by mouth or applied to the skin (patch), certain drug used for varicose vein treatment (sodium tetradecyl sulfate), drugs that affect your immune response (e.g., corticosteroids such as prednisone).
