Depression is an illness of the mind. It is where neurotransmitters in the brain are not balanced out. There is no way to overcome this illness without treatment and it can be serious and in some cases harmful. Some of the symptoms of depression include: Feeling sad and upset a lot of the time, thinking about the bad things in life and what has went wrong with your life, you feel like you’re always weighing other people down and holding them back from having a good time, and also physical pain over different parts of your body that has no medical cause. Depression affects many people of this world and probably affects you or someone close to you. The good news is that there are several effective common cures for depression. Try to give yourself goals. With depression comes frustration and de-motivation. In the beginning it is a very good idea to give yourself certain goals. This can be something quite simple like doing a certain amount of exercise per day or making an effort to stop negative thoughts. When you achieve these goals it will give you extra motivation and encouragement to keep trying to overcome depression. Psychotherapy as part of common cures for depression. Psychotherapy, or commonly known as the talk therapy, is one of the commonly used remedies for depression. This type of therapy involves talking to a psychologist and the regimen can either be short term or long term, depending on the severity of the disorder. Talk therapy is effective because it involves teaching the patient new ways of behaving and thinking to help them cope up with the depression. The effectiveness of psychotherapy, however, does not last long, especially if the person's behavior or way of thinking changes. Aside from that, therapies may not be effective if the person is not comfortable talking to other people. Another downside of psychotherapy is that psychotherapy alone is not enough to treat depression. Because of this people and may need to combine psychotherapy with medication. Electroconvulsive therapy as part of common cures for depression. Electroconvulsive therapy is only used when medication or psychotherapy fails to alleviate a person's depression. This type of therapy is also known as shock therapy because it makes use of an electrical impulse. Before performing the therapy, a muscle relaxant and anesthesia will be administered to the patient. The downside of the shock therapy is that it can cause side effects such as disorientation, memory loss, and confusion. These side effects, however, are said to be short term only. In some cases, treatment may need to be extended to one year period for it to take effect. Also, one of the more natural and potent common cures for depression is meditation. Meditation can be a very effective way of stopping the negative thoughts, that are the root cause of depression. In meditation we learn to silence the mind and realize that our thoughts are not our real essence. Therefore we can find within ourselves our true state of mind, which is not depressed.
