Every person will have experienced anxiety and destructive thinking, at some point of time in their life. Once worries and adverse thoughts crop up in our mind, we see everything in that light. As the ill emotions arise within us, we experience a varying degree of negative thoughts, and as a consequence, it makes us even more anxious and worried. But if we know these ill effects of anxiety and negative thoughts, why do they still torment us? It is because we do not know the cause. If we knew the cause, the effects can easily be solved. The mind of human beings is like a radar. The thoughts that keep arising moment after moment, are only to caution you. What you have to do is decide whether they are useful enough to be paid heed to or not. If yes, take the necessary next steps, and if not, just note its contents and let them go. ●Keep your thoughts normal. It is alright to think up to a certain point, until the mind remains balanced and does not harm you. Say, you are driving to work and suddenly you see a car accident. You get restless as you experience anxiety and negative thoughts. These thoughts are trying to caution you, ‘what if this happens to us and what if that happens?’ If you do not travel with these thoughts into deeper negativity, and instead balance your mind by asking it to remain optimistic, you have changed the bad or negative thoughts into positive by reasoning with it rationally. Thus, you counterbalance your thoughts, keeping them normal and positive. And when you remain optimistic, you are naturally influencing a positive outcome. ●When negative or destructive thoughts surround your mind, keep reasoning with the mind in whichever way you can, but do not agree with it at all. Otherwise, you will suffer from harmful emotions like anxiety and worries. ●Worrying makes the situation worse. You ruin the present and the future too. Therefore discourage this habit of worrying, by deciding to resolve the situation by remaining optimistic and positive. Being positive itself rnremoves these disturbing thoughts from mind. ●Rationalize the bad thoughts. Is there any merit in them, or is it something which is only self-invited? ●If you find that you are infested with negative thoughts, then: -Pray to God, asking for strength to come out of negativityrn-Recite mantras for 15 minutes to an hour. -Visualize the image of your Lord in your mind or go to church or temple as this will ease the worry. -Go for a walk, do exercises, practice yoga and pranayama. This will still your mind and put the things into the right and fresh perspective. ●Once your mind calms down a bit, chat with your mind. Listen to every thought that it comes up with, and say, “Ok, I noted its contents. Now, let’s move onto next.” Listening to this, the mind shall move onto the next thought. This will eliminate over-thinking on a single thought for far too long. ●The bad thoughts arise because of the opinions we formed regarding this matter, in our past life, which are giving their results to us in this life. Therefore, do not give them any credence in your present life, and just let them go. ●If bad thoughts persist, combat each thought by saying it emphatically that, “I am not in favour of this.” This reverses your negative opinion on the subject.
