In order to establish yourself as a reliable source, you would need to provide truthful, accurate, and valuable information. In order to create a positive impression in the eyes of the reporters, you would have to present information in the way they want to receive it. While some media houses prefer receiving press releases, others want a simple Tweet or a phone tip. Journalists generally have a tight schedule that they have to follow. You must respond quickly to their requests, and must always respect the strict deadlines that they have to maintain. Release correct information and news: Public relations cannot be effective unless you provide the media what they are looking for. One of the best tips would be to provide the journalists with information that are truly newsworthy. You must not make the mistake of flooding the journalist’s inbox or voicemail with inconsequential information. This may annoy him/her and he/she may start considering your company’s news as trash. The press release needs to be well written. The headline must be attention grabbing and the content must clearly explain what, why, who, where, how and when of a particular topic. Know how to handle a crisis: Crises take place without a prior notice, and when they do, you need to be prepared to face them head on. Having the ability to fight problems and cope in tough times is extremely important in this line of work. It is always useful for you to have a plan for times like these. Develop and test crisis communication plans. There are some important components of an effective plan. Such a plan identifies the spokesperson, outlines the key talking points, sketches out logistics to respond properly to the media, and makes all the arrangements for handling the injured party and their needs.
