Such business owners need to know is that to submit a business in an online business directory requires a little planning and the right ongoing approach to get the desired results. Firstly, one needs to identify a list of online directories on which one wants to submit a business. Submitting you business to thousands of directories is a very time consuming process and may not yield enough results to make it a good decision. Picking ones that cater for your country and area is a good start as the users are more likely to be in your area (rather than someone overseas who is not really a good prospect). There are a lot to choose from but prioritizing your efforts, regularly submitting to new directories and managing your existing directory listings will ultimately generate new leads. A good way of picking which business directories to list your business with first is to review the traffic levels (if they state traffic levels but many don’t), how professional the site looks (a unprofessional looking business directory can reflect poorly on your business), and is it free or do you have to pay to list (free directories are obviously great value but paid ones can also be good if they offer traffic information). You can also check out the number of listings, the chosen business directory has, especially in your preferred category. If the number is large it shows these businesses have shown trust in this online business directory. Users are also more likely to keep returning to a business directory with a lot of listings because they keep finding what they are after. After choosing the directories, and have started to enter your business details, you will need to specify your industry clearly. If your business category is not mentioned, then you should choose a category that is closest to your business. For example, if you sell car seat covers, you may not find a specific category that reads out as 'Car seat covers’. But you'll definitely find a category of 'Car accessories' and you can list your business in this category. So, you need not miss out any opportunity to give exposure to your business and therefore you should not be skeptical when you want to submit a business. You can and should also add additional keywords that reflect what specific products and services your business offers. Think about what customers would search for when looking for a business like yours and add those terms, if relevant to your business, in as keywords. A word of caution – don’t add in inappropriate keywords or keywords that suggest you have products and services when you don’t as customers won’t like that and the news will spread. Online business directory is a great platform for you to provide information to potential clients. For this you need to present your business in an attractive way and introduce it in a presentable manner. The biography or description about your business should be concise and clear and present all the relevant information that a prospective customer might need to make a choice (i.e. the objective of the company, a brief start-up story, information about the owners, products and services and what makes it different to other businesses). Also, do not mince words while making the user acquainted with your achievements, but they should be genuine, as you need to stand out among your competitors. So include testimonials, case studies and encourage your best customers review your business if the directory offers that. Remember that you should give only correct information whether it’s about your products or services, achievements and back them up with evidence (e.g. voted best restaurant for 2010 by Epicure magazine) or a guarantee (e.g. best price or your money back). So, if a business owner follows these guidelines when they submit a business in an online business directory, they are much more likely to benefit hugely from the advantages that business listing sites offer.
