YouTube is often referred to as the world’s second major search engine for a good reason. Every hour of every day, hundreds of millions of people hit YouTube in search of education, entertainment and inspiration. As a YouTube publisher, the key to making things work lies in gaining as many subscribers as possible. With such staggering competition, it’s not enough to rely on people finding your videos randomly, or on a one-time-only basis. Instead, you need an audience of a viable size to achieve your objectives. But what can you do to guarantee reliable ongoing growth for your YouTube channel? What are the most effective tactics for bringing more followers on board and holding onto them indefinitely? 1. Focus on One Specific Topic or Niche Firstly, subscribers sign up with channels on YouTube with a specific subject of interest in mind. It can be tempting to target the broadest possible audience of viewers with a diverse content library covering numerous interconnected topics. However, the key to bringing more followers on board lies in focusing exclusively on one specific topic or niche. As authenticity is everything on YouTube, it needs to be a topic you are genuinely passionate about. 2. Keep Your Videos Concise Where Possible The appropriate length for any YouTube video will be determined by its content and purpose. But as a general rule of thumb, it is better to keep your videos concise where possible. Short-form content on YouTube tends to be more engaging and sharable than long-form content. Today’s typical YouTube viewer has a fairly short attention span, and therefore expects instant gratification. A point proven by the growing popularity of the new YouTube Shorts feature. 3. Engage with Your Audience Embracing the ‘social’ aspects of social media is also of paramount importance. Publishing quality content on YouTube is not enough to build a successful channel. You also need to communicate and engage with your audience as consistently as possible. Respond to every comment, leave comments on other people’s videos, like, share and generally become part of the community you are targeting. Engaged publishers are always more appealing than those sitting silently on the side-lines. 4. Promote Your Content Elsewhere Using all of your social media accounts to your advantage is also essential. Each time you publish something on YouTube, promote it via as many channels as possible. In the meantime, post links to the best videos from your back catalogue on your other social pages. Don’t expect people to find your content on their own - show them the way. 5. Post More Frequently and Consistently Last up, nobody wants to subscribe to a YouTube channel where new content is rarely uploaded. The whole point of subscribing to a channel is benefiting from a regular and steady stream of new content to enjoy. Research has shown how those who publish more regularly on YouTube are more likely to have larger audiences than those who publish infrequently. Content quality matters most on YouTube, but quantity also plays a role in running a successful channel.
