With the development of science and technology, wheelchairs have acquired a remarkable change. Manual wheelchairs have obsolete with the invention of electric wheelchair. Several people have incorporated the use of these power chairs as it is also known, into their lives. People with limited mobility or those who are recuperating from any illness find it easier to use these power chairs which are available with a number of remarkable features.
The Use of Electric Wheelchair
The electric wheelchair can be used for a number of purposes including cooking, shopping, climbing a hill and so forth. The invention of these chairs is known to be a major breakthrough in the history of mankind. Unlike the manual wheelchairs, these chairs are easy to operate and require lesser effort and toil. Controlled by a number of batteries, the power chairs have many advantages which make it so popular among people today.
The power chair was invented by George Klein to help the injured war veterans. These wheelchairs are also known as motorized wheelchairs as they are powered by electric motors or batteries. As the electric wheelchair is long lasting if maintained well, it is preferred by most of the people who find it difficult to move around independently.
There are basically many types of power wheelchairs available in the online stores today. Known for better mobility and safety, these power chairs are available for both adults and children. Most of these wheelchairs can be folded and dissembled which makes it easy to carry around. Due to these exceptional features, today the disabled people find it easier to move around and live an independent life.
Types of Electric Wheelchair
Though earlier the power chairs included only a single variety as time elapsed, technological growth has led to the inventions of a number of varieties among these power chairs. Power chairs differ according to the strength and usage. Indoor power chairs have lighter frames and have more turning features which makes it appropriate to travel indoors. Rear wheel driven: one of the most widely used and traditional power chairs include the rear wheel driven power chairs. Compared to the front wheel driven chairs, these power chairs are faster but the turning capacities are quite less.
Mid wheel driven: these power chairs are not suitable for rough surfaces as it has tough turning functions. Though it has extra wheel to prevent tipping, it is quite unsteady.
Front wheel driven: most commonly used electric wheelchair includes the front wheel driven chairs as it is more flexible and suitable for both outdoors and indoors.
With the increase in the use of power wheelchairs, there are a number of electric wheelchair manufacturers listed in the online stores. The power wheelchairs can be obtained with a number of features like chin controller, hand controller and so forth. Some of the wheelchairs have unique functions like leg elevation, tilting functions and elevation of seats.
