Electronics Recycling the Correct Way

It is hard to imagine that when buying any type of electronics it could be considered a hazardous waste when you decide to discard them. This is what makes electronics recycling so valuable. These electronics recycling centers know how to specifically recycle electronics so they are disposed of correctly and safely and do not affect the environment.

Electronics recycling starts when the electronic product has to be replaced. Many feel it is okay to throw them in the trash or take them to a landfill but what they do not think about is that they could contain harmful materials in those electronic products. For example, some have mercury inside and this is not environmentally friendly. Electronics recycling is mandated by law in some state jurisdictions.

The highest, and most efficient, way for electronics recycling is to reuse them. If you have a monitor or computer that is still working donate them to an organization. The organization could give them to someone in need or sell them in their shop to raise money for their organizations.

If your electronics does not work, there are other different options for recycling. In some countries, including the United States, your community may offer electronics recycling as part of their community’s regular waste disposal service. Some offer to pick up your recyclable electronics but if not they may have a general location you can take them too. You can check your local newspaper, phone booth, or call your chamber of commerce to see if they know of any local electronics recycling centers. You can also ask friends and family if they know of one.

When recycling electronics you should be aware that there are some companies that claim they do electronics recycling but do not. What these companies do is strip down the parts that are useful and has a market value. The rest of the electronics that is not marketable are improperly disposed of. When this happens, the harmful materials are still put into the environment just as if the entire electronics had been thrown away. When contacting a company for electronic recycling ask out how they are going to recycle it. If they tell you that they are going to remove the valuable parts find out how they are going recycle the rest. If they are going to dispose of it improperly find another electronics recycling center.

In the United States all hazardous waste disposals, including what is in electronics, must be done according to the way the Environmental Protection Agency mandates it to be done.
