In today's challenging economy, most people cannot afford to waste money or resources for any reason. Just as is the case with everything else the average family needs to buy, the cost of food continues to rise. Although food is a basic essential that nobody can do without, there are ways that you can reduce waste and save money on food purchases. Cleaning and organizing your refrigerator and freezer is one way to make sure that you make the best use of your food and money. Here are a few easy tips you can follow that will help you get your refrigerator and freezer organized efficiently.
Out With the Old
If you are like most people, you probably have at least a few food items in your refrigerator or freezer that are past their prime. Although nobody purchases food with the intention of letting it go to waste, the fact remains that it happens all the time. If your refrigerator or freezer is disorganized, it can be easy to lose track of food and let it go to waste. Although you might hate the thought of throwing out food, disposing of anything that is too old to consume safely should be the first step in your refrigerator and freezer organizational plan. Of course, the good new is, once you've cleaned and organized your refrigerator and freezer, hopefully you will never have to throw out wasted food again.
Manage Your "Leftovers"
Utilizing your "leftovers" efficiently is a great way to save money on food. However, it doesn't really do any good to save your leftovers if you never actually use them. In order to avoid the unpleasant task of throwing out spoiled food, it's important to develop a leftover management strategy that works well for you and your family. In most cases, a good set of clear containers that seal tightly can be a big help. If you store your leftovers safely and can easily see what you have available, chances are you will be more likely to use them. To make this task even simpler, you can write dates on the lid of the container so that you can easily see when the item should be used up by. Some plastic food storage containers even have a special area on the lid that can be used for this purpose. If your containers don't have this feature, simply write the date on a piece of tape and stick it onto the lid. This technique works equally well in both the refrigerator and freezer.
Understand Your Family's Eating Habits
If you don't have a good understanding of your family's actual eating habits, it's much more difficult to avoid wasting food. It's important to understand that what works great for one family might not work equally well for your own. For example, if your family is constantly on the go, food items that are portable and easy to grab will get used, while foods that need to be prepared in some way could go to waste. To avoid this problem, try making your own pre-packaged foods. For example, if you put a large container of soup in the refrigerator, at the end of the week you might find that it is still there. But, if you store the soup in individually sized containers, you'll be more likely to pack soup in lunches and take it with you when you are "on the go."
