These days most of us are trying to become more conscious of how and when we use electricity at home. This is partly a result of increasing awareness of the environment and how our energy usage impacts upon the world around us. It is also partly the result of increasing energy prices and an economic climate in which wastage is becoming less and less sustainable. However, many of us do not think quite so carefully about how we use electricity in the workplace. For one thing, many of the employees at any given workplace do not contribute towards the energy bill and might therefore be more careless about wastage because it does not affect their salaries. Business electricity prices do not affect the average employee. For another, the value of convenience at work is particularly high - nobody wants to make their working day more difficult or less time-efficient than it needs to be, so desktop computers and other electrical appliances are often left on 'just in case' when they would be shut down or turned off at home. Nevertheless for many businesses this laissez-faire attitude towards energy consumption in the workplace can become a real financial problem. Excessive energy bills can increase the regular financial pressure on a business by a large margin. Overheads increase and particularly for businesses that work in technology-heavy sectors such as the computing industry these can rapidly become unmanageable. Perhaps even more importantly, most of us spend more waking hours in the workplace than we do in our own homes after accounting for the time we spend out and about when we're not at work. The benefits of saving just a little energy at the workplace every day will make a significant difference in consumption and wastage over the course of a year. Ultimately this will benefit both your business and the environment. If we all do our bit both at home and at the workplace there is great potential for us to reduce the overall energy consumption of the United Kingdom. At a time in which people have become less trustful of nuclear power as a solution to our growing energy problem, every saving helps. Although we would like nothing more than to find a practical sustainable energy solution, so far this has proven to be elusive. Using current technology, solar cells are not efficient enough to cater for our energy needs. Whilst more efficient models are in development it is likely to be a long time before these are mass produced in sufficient quantity to present a practical solution. Unfortunately for now the bottom line is that we all need to become more energy efficient. Whether this means simply turning off your computer when you leave the office to go for lunch or unplugging your phone charger when it is not being used, we all need to do our bit to save the environment and the costs of running our businesses.

The Evolution of the Doorstep Handshake In the early days of the renewable energy boom, the transition to solar power was often viewed as a purely transactional event.
