London’s Hyde Park has been host to many great events over the years, but this summer is likely to be the park’s busiest. Visitors looking to have a leisurely stroll through the park this summer might well bump into concert goers, a royal gun salute, a peace rally or even Olympic Triathletes. Look at any map of London and Hyde Park stands out as the large green rectangle. Originally it was a private hunting ground, but was opened to the public in 1637. Over the years, it has developed into a focus for national celebrations, a bastion of free speech and host to exhibitions, concerts and Olympic events. It is also home to many memorials, from the Peter Pan statue in honour of J. M. Barrie to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain. This summer London is host to the 2012 Olympic Games, while most of the focus will be on the Olympic Park in East London, the centre of London will really be the hub of the cultural side of the Games. London is already one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, but this summer will attract people from all corners of the globe in greater numbers than before. The hotels and bed and breakfasts surrounding the park will be where most of the visitors will stay and the Park will host several free events and activities such as West End Live where actors from London’s musicals will perform in the park. However, sports fans will not be disappointed; large screens showing the highlights of the Olympic Games from around London will attract thousands and several opportunities will be laid on for people to have a go at a range of Olympic sports. Olympic sponsors will not miss the chance to create brand loyalty by entertaining visitors with a range of public pavilions offering free and interactive activities. The rowing boats on the Serpentine Lake will have to make way for Olympic Marathon Swimmers and Triathletes during the height of the Olympic activity in the park. Hyde Park is also the venue for the special opening and closing concerts, showcasing the best of British music. These concerts will add to the long list of superstars appearing in the Park in 2012. The Hard Rock Calling festival will feature Bruce Springsteen, while the Wireless festival is being headlined by Rihanna. Madonna has also chosen Hyde Park to perform her first UK concert for four years. Even after the Olympics and Paralympics have left town, there will be a good reason to look for a nearby B&B as the BBC Proms in the Park celebrates the last night of the Proms on 10 September featuring Katherine Jenkins and Westlife, not forgetting the fireworks finale. Select a high quality London B&B in a convenient location, enabling you to really enjoy 2012 events in Hyde Park.
