The combined oral contraceptives are commonly referred to as the pill, whereas the other form of oral contraceptive, progestogen-only pill is referred as the mini pill. While both forms of contraception are popular among women and capable of providing the users with almost complete protection from unwanted pregnancy, these two types of pills differ from each other in terms of their properties and composition.
Since their introduction in the UK in 1961, contraceptive pills have risen to popularity quite swiftly and right now one third women in the UK, under the age group 16 to 49 years are enjoying benefits of these medications. Compared to the traditional methods of contraception, these new pills can be taken more conveniently and is also less likely to cause side effects. Yasmin is a leading combined oral contraceptive pill in the UK and Ovranette, though is not as popular as its competitor yet, is rising pretty swiftly in the highly competitive market.
The recent demographic surveys have found that throughout the UK almost one-third of all adult women are using oral contraceptive pills to reduce the risk of unwanted pregnancy. These pills, also known as combined oral contraceptives, contain oestrogen and progestogen, two artificial female sex hormones that control the menstrual cycle. Yasmin, although it is one of the most popular contraceptive pills in the UK, it is expected that within next few years it will receive huge competition from Ovranette. A single pill of either medication, which your doctor may prescribe to you, needs to be taken on a regular basis, preferably starting on the first day of your menstrual cycle and then continued for 21 consecutive days, followed by a pill free week.
While you will be almost 100% free from the risk of unwanted pregnancy during these 7 days you may experience withdrawal bleeding. These combined oral contraceptive pills simply increase the natural level of oestrogen and progestogen that should exist in your system. They therefore mimic the function of natural hormones. While oestrogen makes your body believe that ovulation has already occurred inhibiting the release of an egg, the possibility of a sperm’s penetration is made difficult by progestogen as it increases mucous viscosity at the neck of womb.
How does Ovranette work?Ovranette contains ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel as its basic ingredient. These two synthetic versions of natural oestrogen and progesterone override the natural hormonal change in a menstrual cycle. Ethinylestradiol (synthetic oestrogen) tricks your body into believing that ovulation has already happened and stops the production of egg. Levonorgestrel (synthetic progestogen) increases the density of cervical fluid and stops sperms from reaching the womb.
It also keeps changing the thickness of womb lining so that a fertilised egg cannot attach itself to the endometrium and grow. It means that usage of Ovranette provides a woman with three fold protection from unwanted or unplanned pregnancy. However, before you start taking the pill it is always better to ensure that you aren’t allergic to any of the ingredients found in the pill.
