Enjoy Quality Of Life In Congleton
Lying in the south east corner of Cheshire, Congleton is a market town situated about 6 miles to the east of Junctions 17 and 18 off the M6 motorway. Superbly located for Manchester, Liverpool, Chester, Birmingham and other northern cities, Congleton is also within easy reach of the Peak District, the Cheshire Plain, the Welsh mountains and the Lake District. Living standards among the population are high and recent surveys have found that Congleton residents enjoy an excellent quality of life. The countryside surrounding Congleton is an attractive mix of small villages set in open countryside with nearby picturesque towns such as Holmes Chapel, Sandbach and Middlewich. For those who enjoy outdoor pursuits such as walking or cycling, the landscape and natural beauty of the area provides an ideal backdrop. Many people visit the area to enjoy good fishing, golf and bird watching too. In Congleton itself are several lovely public parks. The local council prides itself on the town's floral displays and Congleton Park in particular is worth a visit. There are many children's play areas in the town too. Congleton Market takes place at the Bridestones Centre each Tuesday and Saturday. There are over 80 outdoor stalls and around 11 stalls operating from inside the building. Passing through the town is the Macclesfield Canal which was completed in around 1830. The canal provides excellent walking opportunities and is particularly renowned for its roving bridges which the locals call Snake Bridges. These are bridges built for when the towpath changes sides to allow horses pulling boats to cross over. Congleton Museum, dedicated to the industrial history of the area, is in the centre of town on Market Square. Established in 2002, the museum contains old gold and silver coins as well as an ancient log boat. The borough has two theatres, the 300 seater Daneside which is independently run and situated on Park Road in the town centre. The Clonter Opera Theatre can hold 400 people and is based at Swettenham Heath which lies just five miles to the north of Congleton. On the outskirts of Congleton is Astbury Mere Country Park. In this large open space visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the landscape right across Astbury Mere. A visitor centre is housed in the park and there are all weather paths for walkers with footpath links into the surrounding countryside. The site contains much of interest including extensive wildflower meadows, a pond and mixed woodland. As well as this there is a lake used for fishing and sailing. Other nearby attractions include Little Moreton Hall, Britain's finest timber framed moat house. Paramount's "Lady Jane" starring Helena Bonham Carter was filmed at the hall as were scenes from television's "Moll Flanders". Lyme Park was transformed from a Tudor house into an Italianate palace by Leoni, a Venetian Architect. This fine building was used in BBC's "Pride and Prejudice" as Pemberley House. The nearby Jodrell Bank Visitor Centre and arboretum is located at Lower Withington. There are many hands on exhibits where visitors are able to discover many scientific wonders of our Universe. The Planetarium provides an amazing experience allowing visitors to sit beneath countless stars.
