In the modern era, it can be all too easy to take things for granted. Many of the modern trappings that we have come to depend on in order to make our lives easier and more productive can seem like a right and not a privilege. This is an easy assumption to make because many people currently living today can’t imagine a world without the internet or without many of the modern conveniences that make life easier than it has ever been, such as cars computers, medical technologies, instant coffee makers, cell phones, and other assorted gadgets. It can be hard for modern day citizens to imagine what life was like one hundred years ago, let alone five hundred or worse yet, a thousand years ago. But it can be sobering to think that even though the human race is at the pinnacle of scientific understanding, several hundred years from now, future generations will look upon the current generation as archaic. This is of course nothing to be ashamed about, as it is just the way the world works. But in order for future generations to flourish, the current generation has to take care of the environment. Otherwise, there will be no smug future generations to look down upon our perceived lack of technological advances. This is why, in spite of the many technological advances being made on a daily, if not an hourly basis, the environment continues to suffer. Tech companies and manufacturers release harmful toxins into lakes and rivers, turning bucolic scenery into a hive of decay and a stirring reminder of the avarice and laziness of the current generation. This is why so many green advocates are pushing governments the world over to sign legislation enacting certain safeguards against corporations and individuals alike from causing further and irreparable damage to the world’s ecosystems. To achieve this end, many green activists are launching environmental PR initiatives with the help of a firm that specializes in the unique field of environmental PR. The purpose of an environmental PR initiative is to show people the error of their ways. And this is difficult in any situation, as people can be incredibly stubborn and unresponsive to suggestions, however altruistic, that they change their ways. In the United States of America, this undeserved feeling of always being right and being resistant to change is increasingly prevalent. Compounding this already difficult problem is the inescapable fact that the world economy is in the toilet. And, because many environmental PR initiatives require time, effort, and money from corporations and individuals alike, it can be difficult to elicit a supportive response. This is precisely the reason why so many green advocates are using social media to get their environmental PR initiatives off the ground. The idea behind this is that because social media is so popular, and is driven by user’s interests, rather than outside marketing influence, it can have a more lasting and direct impact upon its desired target. Environmental PR initiatives that are launched with a strong and noticeable social media component are much more likely to succeed as opposed to their traditional counterparts because they give the appearance of being a grass roots movement, as opposed to being the work of evil corporations trying to stuff their pockets with more money. Thus, social media can serve to both legitimize and to advance and environmental PR imitative. Thus, social media can help the environment to flourish for years to come.
