The Epstein Barr virus (mononucleosis or glandular fever) can affect the nerves of the body resulting in symptoms such as headaches and muscle pains.
Conventional painkillers can mask these symptoms in the short term, however they will not address the main cause of the problem. Aspirin in particular should be avoided in cases of Epstein Barr because of its association with Reye's syndrome, which is a potentially fatal condition that affects the liver and the brain.
The best natural approach for headaches and muscle pains is to take some high dose magnesium, which helps to relax the nerves and muscles. The B complex, vitami
E and vitami
C can also help to bring relief. Herbs like burdock root, goldenseal, gingko biloba, rosemary and mint are traditionally used for headaches and migraines.
Epsom salt baths, which are naturally high in magnesium are beneficial – add 2 cups to a hot bath, and have a long, relaxing soak before bed. Massage and seeing your chiropractor can also be helpful.
Certain foods like caffeine, alcohol, oranges, yeast, cheese, cold cuts, smoked fish, pork and vinegar contain the amino acid tyramine, which can cause a rise in blood pressure to cause a headache. Keeping a food diary to see what triggers your headaches is advisable if your headaches are frequent.
If your headaches and muscle pains are not clearing with the advice given above, then it is possible that your liver is congested. The Epstein Barr virus targets the liver, so liver complications are common. Drinking a minimum of 2 - 3 litres of water a day to flush out the virus and toxins in your system is essential. Begin your day with a gentle liver cleanse - lemon juice in a cup of warm water. When you have gained some of your strength back, then a more potent liver tonic based on herbs and the lipotropic agents is a good idea. Some patients with particularly bad headaches or migraines have seen good results with coffee enemas which help clear the liver and gallbladder of toxins.
If your headaches or body pains are prolonged or severe, it is imperative that you consult your doctor. There may be other conditions such as sinusitis, allergy, low blood sugar, hormonal imbalances, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia or anaemia that may be contributing to your condition. It is also worth seeing a chiropractor or osteopath to determine whether your neck and back are out of alignment and putting pressure on your nerves.
Epstein Barr symptoms like headaches and muscle aches are usually seen in the early acute stage of the illness when symptoms are most severe. Fortunately in most cases these symptoms are self-limiting and will disappear once the body has rid itself of the virus. If you need additional help in treating your headaches and muscle pains naturally then please consult a holistic health practitioner.
