Establish true connection with your horse
Horses are very sensitive creatures. If they don’t know you, they refuse to cooperate with you. They will not follow your directions. Moreover, they don’t want to see you around them.
For that reason, before you jump on the horse’s back, you must establish real connection with your horse. You have to reach the level when he follows you as his natural leader. In order to achieve this role, try to apply the following suggestions.
Take time to gain horse’s trust
There is nothing worse then riding a horse that doesn’t trust you. You may find yourself kicked on the ground. So, you have to be patient while trying to earn horse’s trust. You must prove to the horse that you are friendly and can be trust. In order to do that, interact with him in a way that will make him feel safe. For an example, you can try touching his body with a friendly feel. Using a gentle approach you can touch the places where you gain permission.
If you can, spend more time with your horse. Feed him in the morning and evening. Offer him yummy treats such as, sugar cubes or apples. Besides, you can offer him a good massage. Pick up a curry comb and start brushing him before riding and after that.
Learn as mush as you can about the horse’s body language
When playing horse games you don’t have to worry about the horse’s body language. You can interact with the horses virtually just by using the keyboard. In real-life situations, if you want to ride the horse, you must be able to read his body signs. The horse uses his ears, tail, body position and moving speed to tell you what he likes and dislikes. If you are willing to learn his movements, you can understand his feelings and actions.
Improve your understanding of horse’s language by simple observing the horse. Watch him while he is in the crossties, in the filed, in a stall and while being groomed. As the time passes, you will start to notice different emotions and moods on his face. For example, if his eyes are half open, that tells you he is in sleepy mood.
Follow the horse reactions while you are training him
Let’s say you are sitting on a horse’s back, and you are trying to move the horse. So, you are hitting the horse using your legs. When he feels the hitting, he knows it’s time to do something. That tells him that you want some kind of change. Therefore, he starts moving with his feet. If that is the right response to your instruction (moving forward), then you should stop applying the legs. You have to release the pressure when the horse is doing the right thing. That way you are telling to the horse:”Yes, you have done the right thing!”
When teaching the horse to follow your directions, pay attention to his respond. Be aware of the movements he is making when you try to apply pressure on him. If he is doing exactly what you want him to do, be sure that you have great communication with your horse.
The process of creating deep connection with your horse takes time and deduction. But, if you are willing to invest to building true friendship with this animal, the passion and joy you’ll experience will be absolutely priceless.
