What is vaginal discharge? Vaginal discharge is a natural occurrence where the body expels vaginal fluids and cells.

Vaginal discharge serves a key role in maintaining vaginal health. The vaginal fluids that come out carry away the dead cells and bacterias. This process keeps the genital area clean and takes care of vaginal health by preventing infection.

Vaginal discharge that is white and has a thick consistency is completely normal, and nothing is alarming about it. But an abnormal vaginal discharge is something to be concerned about.

The color and odor of vaginal discharge can vary depending on the time of your menstrual cycle. The color ranges from clear to milky white. During your ovulation period and sexual arousal, the flow of the discharge will be higher.

If the color and smell of the discharge are different from the usual and t cause vaginal itching or burning, then it could be a vaginal infection.

Types of Vaginal Discharge:

White

White-colored discharge, especially at the beginning of your menstrual cycle, is normal. However, if the discharge also causes vaginal itching and has a thick consistency or appearance like cottage cheese, then it is an abnormal vaginal discharge that needs to be treated. This type of vaginal discharge can likely be a sign of yeast infection.

Clear and Watery

A clear and watery discharge can occur at any time of the month; this type of discharge may likely flow a bit heavy after exercise. Rest assured, a clear and watery discharge is completely normal.

Clear and Stretchy

When the discharge is clear but has a stretchy, mucous-like consistency, it is an indication that you are ovulating at the moment. This is another normal type of discharge.

Brown or Bloody

Usually, brown or bloody discharge is normal, especially if it occurs during or right after your menstrual cycle. If this spotting occurs during your menstrual cycle and you’ve engaged in unprotected sex recently, then it can be a sign of pregnancy. Spotting occurring during early pregnancy can also be a sign of miscarriage.

In some rare cases, brown or bloody discharge can also be a sign of endometrial or cervical cancer; it is best to consult a ladies problem doctor to get your cervical abnormalities.

Yellow or Green

A thick/chunky yellow or green discharge, accompanied by an unpleasant odor, isn’t normal; it’s an abnormal vaginal discharge. This type of discharge is likely to be a sign of an infection called trichomoniasis. It’s usually spread through unprotected sex.

Causes of vaginal discharge:

Normal discharge is a natural biological process to eliminate bacteria and keep the vagina clean and healthy. But abnormal vaginal discharge is caused by an infection and needs to be treated by a ladies problem doctor. Some of these infections are:

  • Bacterial vaginosis
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Yeast infection
  • Gonorrhea and chlamydia
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Cervical cancer
