It reads like something out of a pulp novel, but an assassination occurred at a high school reunion in Nebraska. Steven Potter, no relation to Harry Potter, was executed with at least a modest amount of prejudice by two hit men with connections to drug cartels.

High school classmates describe Potter as a laid back stoner with minimal ambition. He enlisted in the Marines before graduation, shipped out right after, and survived two tours in Iraq as a sniper scout force recon. He was embittered by the experience. The killing was apparently not the issue. It was the low pay. Why should Cheney and Halliburton make billions of the carnage, while the grunts doing the wet work made pennies?

Potter became a street level drug dealer, and when someone he fronted a kilo of cocaine didn't pay up, he killed him in gruesome public fashion, with a chef's chopping knife at a restaurant. A cartel member happened to be present, and recruited Potter, who became a cocaine trafficker, and on call assassin on the trickiest hits.

The troubles started when Potter botched a hit. He'd been sent to kill a husband, but the wife showed up. She was supposed to have been out of town. Potter never found out how her plans changed, but had no choice but to clip her once she saw him. What he didn't know is that she was his boss' favorite piece of ass. The boss was having the husband offed so she'd have more free time to pleasure him. The wife didn't die immediately, but lay bleeding. Depraved since gunning down dozens of children in Iraq, Potter raped her as she lay dying.

What Potter didn't know is that the husband was an old associate the Don disliked. Shagging the wife was the double up yours. And often up hers. The Don had cameras installed to watch the death. He saw Potter rape his girlfriend. Raping a women didn't bother the Don. An employee disrespectful enough to rape his woman couldn't be allowed. The Don was just, remembered everything Potter had done, knew the war had messed him up, offered to let him leave and live so long as he never dealt drugs again. He was out.

After easy money dealing, real work sucked. Potter turned to dealing again. The Don found out, and put a price out on his old friend.

Potter stayed off the grid for years. He knew the Cartel might try and whack him at the reunion. He had to risk seeing his high school sweetheart. He had joined the Marines the day after he found out she loved another man. That man had died of cancer, she was single again. Cold logic said not to go, but sometimes logic can't withstand emotions, especially love. What was life without love?

Potter met his old sweetheart, professed his undying love for her, and she admitted that he was also the one she had always loved. He then told her that there was something else he had to tell her, and that if she truly loved him, they had to leave immediately. Confused and frightened, she nonetheless agreed, only if he'd kiss her. They kissed. Bystanders cried.

Two assassins were at the reunion pretending to be classmates. They opened fire with Uzis as the reunited couple kissed, and then made a hasty exit before the cops descended.
