When you exfoliate your skin you're simply speeding up the process of shedding the external level of dead skin cells. This process unclogs pores, keeps skin clear and aids in reducing acne breakouts. In normal skin, the skin naturally sheds dead skin cells with no assistance from exfoliating. Oily skin has trouble exfoliating naturally. Oily skin produces even more dead skin cells than normal skin and these dead skin cells have difficulty shedding from the skin. They result in clogged pores which lead to blackheads or zits. That is why exfoliation is more important for acne prone and oily skin. Exfoliating can keep the follicles free of obstruction and decrease formation of blemishes. Physical exfoliants are the most common scrubs that contain synthetic beads that physically lift the damaged and dry skin cells from your face. There are natural exfoliating scrubs that use ingredients such as almonds or apricots instead of synthetic beads but in this case the synthetic option is best. This is because the natural products have sharp corners and can irritate the skin. If you have sensitive skin, you should be careful with any type of physical exfoliant. They cause friction which can irritate the inflamed skin. Chemical exfoliants consist of mild acids that are used to dissolve damaged skin cells. They can be found in various products including gels, night creams and masks. There's a large variation in the strength of chemical exfoliants so you need to make sure you are not using any strong products too regularly. All chemical exfoliants dry your skin so it is important to use a moisturizer after exfoliation. People also use exfoliating gloves and exfoliating brushes on their body. Exfoliating gloves are simply gloves with an exfoliating grain on the palm side. They are used to exfoliate your body in the bath or shower. It's best to use exfoliating gloves that are not too rough. I don't actually use these myself but plenty of people love using them. They leave your skin feeling soft and clean. Again it is important to moisturize after exfoliating your skin. Using a facial scrub too often can make your oily skin worse. There are some products out there which are marketed as daily scrubs. Some even advise that you use them two times a day. I used to exfoliate every day as I thought it was a substitute to using cleansers. I soon realized that this was too harsh on my face and it caused my skin to become oilier with more blemishes. Now I only exfoliate weekly as that is what works best for me. How frequently you exfoliate is actually is based on on the sensitivity of your skin, but I do not recommend using an exfoliating face wash every day like I did. There are also different variations on the strengths of exfoliating cleansers. Some are mild and these can be used more regularly. Generally, how often you exfoliate, depends on the product you use and the sensitivity of your skin. If you think that your skin is getting irritated when you exfoliate, you should try a more gentle scrub or exfoliate less often.
