This historic town takes you to all the majestic architectural splendour of ancient India. Badami derived its name from the legend of Batapi, a famous demon killed by the hermit Agastya.

Cave Temples

Known for its rock-cut cave temples, Badami holds the eyes of history lovers. Carved out of the hills of red sandstone, these temples are over 13 centuries old. The temple caves showcase different religious sects. Two temples are dedicated to Vishnu. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Bhootnath temple is another one. And, the fourth one is a Jain temple. The architectural beauty of Badami lies in the magnificent rock-cut temples and many other structural temples. These temples are composed of four caves and all of them are carved out on a hill cliff in the late 6th century. Simple in style, these four caves are a must visit place in Badami.

The Agastya Tirtha Tank

Situated beneath the cave temples, it is a holy water body, which is highly revered by the pilgrims. Every year, many devotees visit the tank during their visit to Badami. Dating back to 5th century, the tank has a cluster of Bhoothanatha temples. According to Hindu scriptures, it was the birth place of Ganga (Ganges), Yamuna and other holy rivers.

The Archaeological Museum

Located near the Agastya Tirtha Tank, it is a beautiful museum with Shiva's bull, Nandi at its entrance. It overlooks the dammed lake. Apart from Fridays, you can visit this museum. There is a model of the natural bridge of Sidilinapadi. Another interesting representation is the images of Lajja-Gauri (A fertility cult), widely practised in the area during Chalukyan times.

Badami Fort

Strategically located atop the hill, the fort surrounds large granaries and a treasury of magnificent temples atop the northern end. The fort also encompasses an underground chamber, double fortification walls and several other architectural wonders. The fort houses a carved temple perched on top of the northern end-Malegitti Shivalaya. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is one of the oldest temples in the area.
