The hymen is the thin skin membrane located at the vaginal opening. Many cultures put primary significance on the hymen, particularly in its intact form, as it is taken to be a symbol for a woman’s purity. While there are other ways through which the hymen can be damaged, it is usually a woman’s first encounter with intercourse that tears the membrane. rnIn the past, once the film of skin is injured, it stays that way forever. However, with modern plastic surgery techniques, hymen restoration is now possible with hymenoplasty. During the surgery, the outer layer of the hymen is extracted and grafted onto the tear in the membrane. When the grafted skin heals, the hymen would look and feel as if it was never broken in the first place. There are even cases wherein a packet of blood is integrated into the whole structure to simulate the bleeding that comes with the hymen’s first eruption. rnThe entire procedure takes about an hour, two at the most. There is no significant downtime, and patients would be able to return to their normal activities the day after the surgery. The post-operation period would be marked by some swelling and discomfort in the area, which should gradually disappear with time. Complete recovery is expected within a couple of weeks. rnSince the treatment area of concern is very delicate, hymenoplasty surgeons carefully evaluate patients before approving them for the procedure. The overall health of the vagina is examined in advance to make sure that no complications would arise during the actual operation. The doctors would also provide the patients with tips to prepare them for the cosmetic treatment. rnThere are a number of reasons why many women decide to pursue this surgery. Some have cultural and religious motivations for seeking the help of hymenoplasty surgeons. Others do it for psychological reasons, as a form of empowerment after being a victim of sexual assault. Lastly, there are also women who do it with purely cosmetic objectives, such as those who have been married a long time and want to bring the passion back in their relationships. rnIt is imperative to hire only the best hymenoplasty surgeons for this task of precision. Women need to find doctors they trust to ensure that they are under able cosmetic supervision before, during, and after the procedure.
