Situated in the beautiful county of Northumberland, Bowsden is a quaint village within a lovely rural countryside setting with views for miles around. The village is mainly surrounded by farming land and fields as far as the eye can see and small areas of woodland complete this rural idyll. To the south of the village, just six miles away, is Berwick upon Tweed, a market town steeped in Northumberland history and culture. The village also lies inland off the beautiful North Sea coastline close to Lindisfarne Island, often referred to as Holy Island. Although the village has retained its quiet charm there are still plenty of amenities and things to do within close distance giving villagers the best of both worlds. The village is small in size with pretty country cottages and farm houses alongside newer buildings, all blending seamlessly together. The whole area is immersed in history with Roman roots including the Devil's Causeway passing the village just one mile to the east. This Roman Road runs through the county for about fifty five miles up to Berwick upon Tweed from Hadrian's Wall just north of Corbridge. Treasures from the Roman Empire have been unearthed close by along the route including Roman coins. There are many other places of historical interest close to the village. As a border region between England and Scotland, Northumbria has lots more castles, forts, towers and battle sites to explore than anywhere else in the country. During Anglo-Saxon times the county was one of biggest and most powerful, but suffered constant invasion from Scots, English and Danes. Lindisfarne Castle is just eight miles from the village situated on Holy Island. It was built during Tudor times to defend the local area from Scotland invading and sits high up on a rocky peak. Chillingham Castle is also close by just 10 miles away from the village becoming a castle in the fourteen century. Again the castle occupies a tactical position against border invasions. Paxton House, situated just seven miles from the village is another hidden gem to explore. It's a great example of an eighteenth century country house estate featuring period furniture and antiques, a large picture gallery of masterpieces and eighty acres of landscaped gardens, parkland and woodland. The area surrounding the village is ideal for those with a love of nature and outdoor activities. There are some great walking and cycle routes with a variety of walkways and footpath networks. Choose from paths through the hillside to alongside the stunning coastline. The county is a haven for birdwatching and wildlife including rare species and breeds. Along the coastline and cliffs, seabirds including puffin can be found. The Farne Islands close by are famous for their breeding of seabirds and include large numbers of different birds including again puffin, guillemots and eiders. Berwick upon Tweed has a range of amenities within easy reach of the village. Here, you will find large chain supermarkets, high street retail chain shops and many local independent shops and other amenities such as pubs, restaurants, doctors and banks.
