Explore the shades with tie dye
Bandhani, is the Indian name for ‘tie-and-dye’ technique, and is known to be ages old, probably 5000 years old, and is been practised in areas of Africa, Japan and India. Tie-and-dye in India, is known to be originated in Gujarat and Rajasthan. The word ‘Bandhani’ comes from the Sanskrit word Banda which means ‘to tie’. The early masters of this beautiful craft is the Khatri community in Gujarat. Before the earthquake of 1956, natural sources of colourslike flower, roots, berries, barks were used to dye the clothes. Later on due to cheap prices of chemical dyes, the originality of dyes were replaced by chemical dyes.
This age old technique of designing clothe is all based on skill and patterns equated together to create beautiful impressions. Firstly, the cloth is dyed evenly in the desired colour and a sheet of plastic with holes arranged according to the design is placed on the top of the cloth. The dyer then tightly ties that portion with a hole with a thread, and then the fabric is washed to remove the imprints. The fabric is dipped in a lighter and rinsed, squeezing the extra liquid and then again tying and dying takes place. The cloth is left to soak for few hours. Lastly, the whole fabric is washed and starched. Once dried, the knots are open, thus leaving the unique patterns. Once the whole processing is done, different type of patterns like waves, dots, or other abstract type patterns are formed. Earlier, only two colors were used. Red and yellow are considered as holy colors, and so maximum bandhani designs comprised of only these two colours. Later on, with change is fashion and modernisation, other bright colors became part of this age old technique.
