There are numerous reasons why more and more women are turning to labiaplasty surgery. The reasons for undergoing the surgery are split into three pretty near equal categories, the first is to fix a functional impairment, the second for aesthetic reasons, and finally for both aesthetic and functional reasons. After the surgery 90-95% of women, depending on the survey report they are satisfied with the procedure. As for the history of the procedure, it is somewhat controversial in many circles. There are numerous methods of performing a labiaplasty, and generally speaking the woman leaves hospital the same day with minimal pain and discomfort. Some of these methods include: • Edge Resection – This technique involves stopping the blood flow to the edge of the labia. Following this the surgeon removes the excess tissue and sutures the wound to prevent blood loss. The result is considered somewhat unnatural as it removes the wrinkles making the labia look oddly perfect. • Laser Straight Edge – As a technique the laser straight edge technique allows the removal of the darker edges along the labia. As a procedure it heals quickly, and causes little pain or thermal injury. It also allows clinics like David Ghozland, M.D., Inc to shape their patients’ labia in the way the patient finds most desirable. • Central Wedge Resection – This technique carries a number of risks including damage to the nerves. Because it is a full thickness resection it preserves the natural edge of the labia. Meaning the overall result is more natural looking, however it can under-correct the labia, or over-correct it. It is also more painful and likely to scar. Risks Like any surgery there are many risks to labiaplasty. Procedures using lasers are naturally less risky as they can be completed under local anesthesia, whereas some of the more invasive methods such as resection are often performed under full sedation. The later case providing the additional risks associated with anesthesia. There are other risks including bleeding, irritation and infection. All of these risks can be dangerous in their own right. Bleeding can lead to severe consequences including infection that could transfer to the blood leading to very serious complications. It is also possible that the procedure will cause nerve damage leading to chronic pain, a lessening of sensation, or an increase in sensation. Though all of these complications and risks are rare. Benefits The benefits of having the procedure done are numerous. Women who have the procedure done often feel more confident in their sexuality, and experience increased arousal and satisfaction in many cases. The confidence boost comes from the fact that the vaginal area is rejuvenated and made to look and feel like it did when a woman was younger. As a procedure it is one that is sure to stay popular for some time to come.
