Over the last few years we’ve seen a dramatic increase in those who want to ‘escape’ it all. But escape what exactly? Technology? People? Work? Well, for whatever reason, it’s not a great idea. Real explorers take exactly what they need for their trip. Climbers and hikers are great examples of this. Amongst their gear they will always have a means to stay in touch. A cell phone may not work at the top of Mount Everest, but they will have a Satellite Phone instead. Why? Because every good explorer knows the important of staying in touch, whether that’s to hear a familiar voice, boast to friends and family or for use in emergencies. Escaping on vacation means that you are equipped with the basics, some clothes, food and a little money. Taking in the world, and its sights and sounds, in all of its glory. Sounds great… doesn’t it? Well, most of us will have a cell phone, computer, easy access to healthcare back home, are you willing to go without all of these on your trip? One item in particular is a pillar of today’s society – the humble cell phone. Wherever you go, it’s there, ready to make a call, send a text or update your Facebook status. So, why go without? You can have as much fun exploring in safety than risking it all escaping. While on vacation most people want to explore, take in local food, customs and traditions, and interact with local people. This is a normal vacation for most, however each represents a risk or danger. We all like to think where we are staying, whether that’s a hotel, or hostel, that it’s safe or the food we eat has been cooked properly. If you have taken your cell phone with you, or bought an international cell phone, you’re in much safer hands than for those who haven’t. Exploring comes in so many different forms. As mentioned before, good examples of explorers are climbers and hikers, however you don’t have to be someone remote to be categorized as an explorer. You can quite easily explore cities and other populated areas. There are lots of reasons why people choose to take a means to communicate with others whilst on vacation. The main reason is safety. Think about it. You’re a phone call away from friends and family, local services such as the police and health centers, and your hotel. You can also call internationally, which is a great help if you need to call your bank or insurance company back home. My advice would be to put your own safety and well being first. The cost of carrying an international phone with you, even as a last resort, shouldn’t be overlooked.
