Laser skin resurfacing is a big step forward with the introduction last year of "fractionated" technology. Fractionated lasers are just a narrow laser beam and spot size to treat smaller areas of skin with each laser pulse. These lasers typically use a model generator to quickly create many of these small pulses to the skin, leaving small gaps between or rough spots. It is these small shortcomings, as well as a random pattern down the pulse, which allows more cooling of the skin and less damage to surrounding tissue. This reduces the healing time, and after a patient, as well as reduce their exposure risk factors, such as scarring, discoloration, infection, etc.

Fractionated laser technology behind Fraxel, Lumenis also Utlrapulse. The two companies now offer fractionated CO2 (carbon dioxide) lasers.
