Kitchen vents serve a practically important role in the kitchen. Their main function is to draw smoke and odors away from the cooking surface thus regulating air circulation in the kitchen. The purchase of these vents can somehow be intimidating especially due to the availability of many designs and features. Homeowners thus need to consider certain factors before purchasing a particular type of kitchen vents so as to make an informed decision.

1. Type of vent

The market offers different types of these appliances. Their types can be classified into three main categories based on how they are mounted; the in wall air box, the rear box and the in box mounted air box. The in wall air box is mounted on the wall cavity with its ducting either facing up or down while the rear riser can be position at the back of a cook top.

2. Size of your kitchen range and vent

While purchasing these appliances it is important that you check their width since they come in different sizes. The vent hoods should at least be the same size with your range if not larger. A very large vent could take a lot of room in a small kitchen. Always make sure you measure the size of your range before setting out to purchase a vent.

3. Type of filters

Filters are important accessories to kitchen exhaust vents and the right one depends on how your stove is used. Buyers can choose from the following charcoal filters, baffle filters, oil cups, aluminum steel mesh and stainless steel mesh. Charcoal filters bond with contaminants and remove them from circulation. These filters however need to be replaced after every six months. Aluminum and stainless steel mesh filters work by catching grease and oil through a fine mesh made of respective materials.

4. Additional features

There are a number of additional features which come with certain types of these appliances. Light is an important inclusion to vents that are above the stove top while some vents come with heat sensors to speed up fan or initiate an alarm if the air becomes too hot. Some models come with an automatic shut off time feature which can control how long you would want the appliance to run.

A clear understanding of your need and preference is necessary before buying any model of kitchen exhaust vents. Research on the available models, their features, their cost, their width size and then make a choice while considering the size of your kitchen. This will enable you to make an informed decision and buy an appliance that will offer quality service.
