Pulse oximetry is a non-invasive process of getting the oxygen saturation in a patient’s blood as well as pulse rates. Pulse oximeter is a very convenient and useful device that is clipped on the translucent part of a patient’s body like the earlobe or index finger. They are normally used on patients that are staying in critical care departments, intensive care unit and emergency rooms. Normal oximeter readings range from 90 to 100 percent, lower than this range means that the patient lacks oxygen in his body. The most popular type of pulse oximeters are the ones attached on the fingertip. A pulse oximeter is very easy to use. Because of this, many pulse oximeters that are portable and for home use emerged in the market. To choose the best oximeter that you will use at home, it is important to take note of these following factors before buying one. The first thing that you need to think about is for who the oximeter is. If an adult is going to use it, then you should opt to buy the regular pulse oximeters available in the market. However, if a child is going to use it, it is then advisable for you to buy an oximeter that is smaller in size, specifically, the pediatric pulse oximeter. Pediatric pulse oximeter works almost the same as the regular ones. The only difference is that a pediatric pulse oximeter is smaller to give the correct measurement of the blood oxygen saturation because children have smaller fingers. If the oximeter fits perfectly, then it will give the best measurement, if not, then chances are there will be errors in the measurements that it will yield. Another thing that you need to put into consideration is the type of the oximeter; it should be simple and user friendly. This is so you wouldn’t have any problems doing the reading on your own even if you don’t have any background in medical field. It is also important that you look online for more information about the oximeter that you are trying to buy. Look for video tutorials as well that are widely available in the internet. Lastly, you also need to look for an oximeter that is well within your budget. If you will need it for normal readings and monitoring only, then it is okay to buy the cheaper ones. However, if you are going to use it extensively or if you have poor blood circulation, then it is best to invest with top of the line pulse oximeters that will give more accurate readings.
