There are several herbal supplements that can be used in the management and control of insomnia and other sleeping disorders. People who are suffering from these sleeping disorders are fully aware that such conditions are not only annoying but can also cause mood swings, general lethargy and other health issues. Remedies for insomnia may come in the form of prescription medication, OTC sleeping tablets and herbal supplements. In this article, we will look at one of the most popular herbal supplements that are used as sleeping aid remedies – melatonin. Melatonin – A General Overview Melatonin is a kind of hormone that comes from our pineal gland, which is a small gland that is found in our brain. Melatonin is primarily responsible for the regulation of our wake and sleep cycles. There are trace amounts of melatonin that are present in the food that we eat, and these include vegetables, fruits, grains and meats. There are also several supplements that are high in melatonin and which are primarily used as sleep aids. Melatonin as Sleep Aid Our body is controlled by an internal biological clock. This is what defines our sleeping habits. To a certain extent, this internal clock is partly responsible for the amount of melatonin that is produced by our body. Under normal conditions, the melatonin level in our body starts to pick up starting from mid- up to the latter part of the evening. In addition to this, melatonin levels remain high for the most part of the evening but begin to decline during the early hours of the morning. However, melatonin levels start to decline as we age. Melatonin production and release are also affected by the presence of light. This means that during the winter months, where we have shorter daytime, our body is capable of producing more melatonin. This is primarily because our body starts producing melatonin earlier than usual. During the summer months, the opposite condition prevail, where our body starts to produce melatonin later than usual. Melatonin and Age There are several scientific studies that established a direct relationship between the level of melatonin and age. Specifically, young kids possess the highest melatonin levels at nighttime, and these gradually decline as we become older. This is one of the reasons why some older adults suffer from sleeping problems. Nonetheless, several medical experts agree that further studies need to be performed to really determine the dynamics and nuances of our sleep and wake cycles. If you are planning to use to melatonin supplement as sleep aid, it is recommended that you consult with your doctor before you make your final decision.
