Microtia is a congenital abnormality of the external ear which can be corrected through reconstructive surgery. The reasons why microtia occurs are still unknown. The condition is characterized by a small external ear, but in its extreme form, the entire ear could be missing. Microtia surgery has many stages and involves harvesting cartilage from the rib cage to build a new ear. If your child has been diagnosed with microtia, it is necessary to understand all facts about microtia ear reconstruction before the treatment begins. This article outlines the key points.

  • Goals of Microtia Reconstruction

In congenital microtia, the malformation of the ear is clearly visible. The surgery begins when the child is five or six years old, though the exact time depends on the auricular growth and the size of the rib cage. A series of operations are performed to give the ears a normal appearance. In the final stage, the microtic ear is replaced by the new auricle.

  • The Ear Reconstruction Procedure

Only by a plastic surgeon with specialized experience can perform microtia surgery. A proper understanding of the anatomy and structure of the ear is essential to contour the existing auricular framework or to build a new one.

A CT scan helps the surgeon understand the extent of the microtia repair required. In the first stage of the treatment, the cartilage necessary for the reconstruction is removed from the rib cage. The cartilage is then shaped and placed in the framework for the new ear. The next stage is the transposition of the lobule. This is followed by the reconstruction of the tragus. Finally, the auricle is elevated or lifted to the proper position. This completes the ear reconstruction procedure.

General anesthesia is administered as microtia surgery procedures can take several hours. Suction drains are placed to allow adaptation of the skin the cartilage and are removed 3-4 days after the surgery. Dressings are removed after 4-5 days. Antibiotics are administered at all stages of the surgery.

  • Post-operative Care

Proper post-operative care is critical as complications can arise. It is therefore important that the child is made aware about the issue and understands the surgical process. This will help to ensure the child's cooperation during the post-operative stage.

  • The Surgeon and The Surgical Center

One of the most important facts about microtia surgery is that it requires a skilled and committed board-certified plastic surgeon with relevant experience − about 5-10 successful operations a year to his credit. Maximum patient safety is ensured if the procedures are carried out in an AAAASF-accredited surgical center.
