So you decided to get a new job. You are ecstatic to have a new workplace, new boss, and new workmates. You’ve played your first day a thousand times in your head and you’re very hopeful that you’re going to have the best job and officemates this time around. However, reality strikes and instead of having balloons and confetti on your first day, you have to face a bunch of paperwork. And to make your day worse, the nearest officemate to your desk seems to ignore your presence. Most of your day will be spent in the office and if you feel miserable in your workplace , it will negatively impact you both emotionally and physically. It is frustrating to not have someone you can call a friend in your office. However, this doesn’t mean that there is no hope left. Don’t be the lonely girl or guy in the office. Be brave and try these tips to build new friendships! Be The Person You’d Want To Be Friends With If you feel like no one is initiating to be your friend, maybe it is time to ask yourself this question: Am I the kind of person I want to be friends with? Yes, you might be nice once people get to know you, but it would be better if you show everyone that you are approachable. You can start by smiling to people more often or by sharing your umbrella with an officemate who is stuck in the rain. Start with little things and people will eventually realize how nice you are! rnBe Genuinely Interested One mistake that you might be committing when you’re trying to make friends is asking questions that won’t lead to a good conversation. The key to showing your officemates that you’re interested in them is by asking open-ended questions. Questions like “How was your weekend?” or “Where’d you buy your shoes?” will show that you are sincere about getting to know your officemates. Remember that being interested in other people will win you more friends than trying to be interesting enough for them. rnBe The One To Show Initiative Making new friends also means summoning all your courage to ask your officemates if they want to eat together in a new restaurant or shop together in the mall. Bonding with your co-workers will enable you to know them slowly but surely. It doesn’t have to be an out-of-the-blue-invitation. For example, when a workmate mentions that he or she wants to check out a new movie, you can casually say that you want to watch it too and would love to join him or her. rnBe Friends On Social Media If you’re an introvert and you are too nervous to try the tips above, then you can start by adding your workmates on Facebook or following them on Instagram. Social media is the easiest way of connecting with people. You can chat with them online first and then have the confidence to talk to them in person. Interacting online will help you establish your connection and finally have friends in the office!
