Before you start looking around for a family doctor, you should have a general understanding of what the profession is comprised of and how these family physicians came to practice care. Family medicine is the medical practice by an educated and licensed medical professional that is designed to cater and care for people at a variety of ages. Also called family medicine associates, doctors of family medicine are trained to recognize and care for a variety of commonly seen sicknesses. Family medicine physicians administer prescriptions and vaccinations. They can stitch up an open wound and they can remove moles. Unless or until a physician of family medicine recommends a specialist for a particular patient, it is usually the family doctor that will be consulted about health concerns of the American family. If after those health concerns have been addresses, the family doctor thinks the patient needs to see a specialist, those recommendations will be made and the patient referred to the appropriate medical specialist. Before a medical license can be achieved, those wishing to practice family medicine must complete four years of higher or college level education. Some students who have an interest in the family medicine and life sciences early on in life will major in Biology or Pre-medicine. After the four year accreditation has been achieved, a student interested in becoming a licensed practitioner of family medicine or other medical specialization, will transfer to medical school. Applying to medical school and the acceptance process may take close to a year, so serious students plan ahead and search for the right school years in advance. The duration of medical school lasts an additional four years of education where students focus on such disciplines as anatomy, physiology and other similar courses that will strengthen their abilities in medical diagnosis and treatment. The final two years of medical school are often spent in medicine residency internships at hospitals and other medical facilities. Under the care and guidance of licenses medical physicians, these students gain hands on experience in the work place. If and when all criteria are met by the student a graduation will take place and the student will have earned a prized and proud Medical Doctor (MD) degree. An MD degree does not mean the student is now free to perform private practice. To do this and to become licensed to practice family medicine, the now MD must complete 3 to 4 years of family medicine residency where they may practice similar family medicine under the supervision of an experienced and licensed medical doctor. You might find a doctor of family medicine working independently or with a group of other doctors. Doctors of family medicine also will sometimes work in hospitals and clinics. Some family medicine physicians work for non-profit organizations such as the American Red Cross and The Gates Foundation. Their extensive years of training have made the practitioners of family medicine very valuable to a variety of organizations and particularly valuable to your family. If you are interested in finding the right practitioner of family medicine for you and your family then you should talk to your family, friends and neighbors about doctors that they like in the area where you are living. Often times, personal recommendations are the very best advice that you can ever get.
