God’s own country has several small hill resorts. What looks like a small piece of land on the global map is dotted with several ecstatic hills that serve both to the religious tourists as well as to the nature explorers.
Kerala’s greenery spreads to the hills also. There are people living on those hills and small townships scattered on the way to the top and at the top. There are other hills surrounding the hill resorts making it a blissful place for recharging your senses. Some hills host temples that people from around the planet visit. The world famous Sabrimala temple is also part of a hill resort.
Periyar Hill Station
Periyar Hill Station is actually a wildlife sanctuary situated on the Cardamom hills. It is said that the sanctuary occupies approx. 700 square kilometers of the hill area. Though you can opt to walk, it will be difficult to cover the entire sanctuary on the foot. Vehicles are provided by the administration so that you can enjoy the sanctuary while the driver skillfully navigates you through the routes so that you can spot the wildlife better.
You get trails such Border Hikes, Tiger Trails and Jungle Patrols. The Periyar sanctuary is surrounded by homes and rest houses for tourists (paid, of course). The infrastructure has recently gone through a depression due to poaching. However, you can now see the residents taking up the cause of protecting the wildlife and greenery.
Munnar Hill Station
One of the best Kerala destinations is the Munnar Hill Station. Situated at an altitude of 8000 feet above the sea level, and located at the convergence of three mountain streams: Mudrapuzha, Kundala and Nallathani.
In the British era, they used it as the national resort for their families in the summer. You can still find the British traces in the area but the main attractions are the towns, food and tea plantations spread over the hills.
Another highlight of this beautiful place is the Anamudi peak, which is the highest in the Deccan Plateau hills. The Munnar Hills are also called Kannan Devan Hills in the regional dialect.
Wayanad Hill Station
The Wayanad Hill Station is located at an altitude of 800 to 2100 meters above the sea level. Wayanad is famous for plantations of rubber, coffee, tea, and masala spices. The plantations spread out to as far as your eye can see.
In addition to the plantations, you will find the welcoming people cute and homely. You can rent out places to stay there for nature therapy. The place is home to the oldest tribes in India. Among other attractions are Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and Pookar fresh water lake that are double up as picnic spots.
Vagamon Hill Station
Vagamon Hill Station lies at 1100 meters above the sea level. There are plenty of attractions for both religious and nature tourists. The hills are covered with grass, neatly cut lawns and other types of vegetation. Located at a distance of 100 km from Cochin, the hill station is house to small town and religious shrines for both Hindus and Christians. There is also a dairy farm managed by Buddhist monks.
The place is ideal for trekkers who want to go backpacking. Paragliding, mountaineering and rock climbing activities are easily accomplished at this place. In addition to adventure enthusiasts, people who love natural beauty are welcome to this place.
