The internet is a great equaliser; a one man business can compete with major corporations on the internet.

This has also led to an understanding in some quarters, that the internet can produce instant results. I get asked “What is the fastest way to rank on Google page 1..” and the answer is simple:

The fastest way is the quickest way to failure, period.
Anything worth building which will stay the course of time needs attention and perseverance. Instead of trying to beat the system, the question which should be asked is: what are the essential parts, which when executed properly, that can provide the desired result for a website, to rank on page 1?

For any website to make it to Google page 1 rank the following elements should be present:

• Good website design layout which flows naturally.
• Interesting, engaging and unique content written for humans and not solely aimed at search engines robots with keywords galore
• Dispersing the content to relevant places on the internet to build a presence which leads to traffic and then an incremental increase in salesr
And that’s just a good start!

I will focus on the last two elements, engaging & unique content and making sure that it gets in front of the right people.

Engaging and Unique Content

As a business owner, you are the only person who knows about your business in intricate details. You know your products, what sells most, your customers, what are the typical questions you get asked, solutions that you offer for those questions, problems customer may face on various issues i.e. late deliveries and how to resolve it etc.

You are in the unique position to write and engage your customers. And the best way to do this is to

ï¼ create a blog andrnï¼ start answering the questions that you are normally asked in an informative and honest wayrnï¼ write as you would describe something to your customersrnï¼ mention the name of a regular customer who has asked you a question and answer it in as much details as possiblernï¼ invite them to comment on your blogrnï¼ discuss your market and provide general information without trying to sell anythingrnï¼ write about the advantages and disadvantages of a forth coming products. This may seems odd but people appreciate honest reviews and this exercise builds more trust quickly. People will surprise you by buying that product from you. ï¼ write about your business development issues, your team etc. Show that you are not a superman or superwoman!
The list is not exhaustive but this should give you a very good idea that engaging and unique content is not that difficult to create, well most of the time!

Content Publication

If your website has been submitted to the search engines your blog will be picked up by them. However, you can help your blog contents by publishing it off the blog so it can find itself in front of your current and potential customers.

One of the easiest ways to publish your content and put it in front of larger audiences is to build a social media presence.

Some of the social media sites that I would strongly
recommend are:

ï Facebookrnï Diggrnï StumbleUpon andrnï Delicious

Facebook is all the rage but the other three social sites where people have created groups around markets, products and brands have following in millions too. Use one of the listed social sites and engage people by simply answering their questions and providing relevant and up to date information but without selling. You can also post your blog here to keep your audiences engage.

Once you have the above being done on regular basis, there is no fixed formula on how much and how frequently a blog should be written or social sites updated. However, at the beginning, a minimum of once a week writing on the blog and addressing one of the social media sites will yield results in the medium term to long term.

These results come in the shape of people linking to your blog or website from these social sites. Google places a great deal of importance on “social signals” or these links and ranks your website higher.

All of the above should be easy to implement but requires consistency to get good results. As I said at the beginning that getting to Google page 1 needs perseverance and attention. This is not a quick way but, as you engage your customers on a regular basis, you will build trust and reputation. This is the gateway for long term success and higher ranking in the search engines, yielding sales and profits on a regular basis.
