rnFather's Day has been celebrated for years around the world, but usually on different dates. Do you know the origin of this beautiful day which is meant to honor fatherhood and celebrate paternal bonds? We tell you the story behind the first Father's Day. The history of Father's Day As they say, the celebration of Father's Day started in 1910 in the United States. It was Sonora Dodd, the daughter of a veteran in the Civil War who began it – almost without knowing it – when she wanted to thank her father for all the effort he had made to educate her and see her grow up on a farm in the state of Washington. So, it was Mother's Day in 1909 when Sonora said "why not have a day for fathers too?" Hence, she proposed to celebrate on the birthday of his personal hero, his father, on June 5. However, she did not find much support initially. And also, the June 5 wouldn't stand as the precise date. However, the same Sonora encouraged her friends to celebrate whenever they wanted. It was in 1924 when US President Calvin Coolidge declared it a national celebration. Although, it was not until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson proclaimed the third Sunday of June as the date for the celebration of Father's Day in the United States.
