When you think back to when you were a kid, what did you want to do? Were there limitations on these dreams? Or were they huge dreams where you ruled the world, or were a famous movie star? What is it about childhood that allows such limitless, magical dreams? Lack of FEAR!!
We start off not being afraid of anything. Think about it. When you tried to crawl and did not succeed over and over and over again, you persisted – and eventually crawled (or walked instead!). There was nothing to use as a point of reference that indicated failure. As the years went on, there were many, many milestones and adventures. Some were fun and some were painful! Remember falling off that bike? Made you feel a little scared to get back on, didn’t it? This is when a healthy dose of fear is good. It more often than not prevents us from seriously injuring ourselves, or others
Then there is the fear that sucks the dreams out of us. We are told to sit up, pay attention, get our heads out of the clouds. We have to go to school, get a job, work hard for thirty or forty years and hopefully retire with some money while there are still a few good years left in us. The dreams get smaller and eventually squashed under semesters, deadlines, jobs we just tolerate and responsibilities. Once in a while the rock star comes out, much to the chagrin of everyone else in the room, but that elusive rock star is gone in a fleeting moment.
So, why do we let those dreams stay locked up and hidden forever? Agreeably, not everyone can be a rock star – there is a certain level of talent required in most cases, but new dreams are always available. Why can’t we have the life we dream of or be financially free? More often than not, FEAR gets in the way. The good news, actually, the truly fabulous news, is that fear can be conquered! All these things that we worry about usually never even happen anyway, so what is the point of worrying? And that silly voice in your head asking why you would do that and telling you that you can’t do it can be quieted. That little voice is your own worst enemy when it comes to your dreams. Don’t listen to it!
First, take a good long look at one of your fears. You may want to write this down.
Where did this fear come from? Were you a child when you first felt this particular fear, a teenager, a new employee?
What does this fear mean to you? Does it make you feel that you are not smart enough, or not good enough?
Now ask yourself what is the worst that could happen if your fear came true. Some answers will be negative, some may be positive, but there will be answers. Pick those answers apart. For your negative responses, keeping asking “what if?” until you get to the heart of the issue.
Now look at those scenarios and see them for what they really are – excuses. It is far easier to come up with an excuse to not do something that may challenge you and live with the status quo. What are you going to do about it? Are you going to sit back and let life happen to you , or are you ready to challenge yourself and conquer that fear by moving forward through the fear and quite likely creating a success?
The future does not exist yet, so live in the now, dust off those dreams and get ready to make them your reality.
